Some might find these bejeweled skulls morbid or tacky, but I think they’re gorgeous. Maybe I have strange taste, but I’d love to have a room to decorate with dark leather furniture, old books, bell jars, and creepy-beautiful pieces like the ones above. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll have the space or resources to do that for a long time.

(For the curious, these pictures were taken at Kimberly Baker‘s jewelry shop in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, and Cargo in Portland’s Pearl District.)

I’m ashamed to say it, but I only recently came upon J.C. Leyendecker’s work when someone on Tumblr posted these pictures. They’re from one of the adverts he did for Arrow Collar shirts, and are a great example of his captivating style, which was instantly-recognizable in his time.

A brilliant illustrator in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Leyendecker really had debonaire and dapper down to a science—I feel like Michael Fassbender or Tom Hiddleston would look perfectly at home in one of his paintings. They’ve both got that 1920s, Great Gatsby, Ivy Leauge hearthrob look…

Sorry, where was I? Haha, just kidding.

After after researching a bit online, I stopped by the library and picked up this huge book about Leyendecker’s life and career. It turns out that Leyendecker had a real appreciation for the male form, to put it euphemistically. In fact, he would often apply oil to his models’ bodies and paint them by candlelight to better highlight the “male surfaces he admired most”. A bit scandalous, no?

Reading through this book, I really wish that we had more great illustration in our lives. Then again, we probably do and I’m just ignorant on the subject. I mean, who is the pre-eminent illustrator of our generation? I feel like I should know, but I don’t. Ah well. Here’s a picture of the blueberry olive oil cake I’ve been working my way through this past month. Are you supposed to keep cakes that long in the fridge? Yet another thing I feel I should know but don’t, I suppose. It still tastes great, though, haha.

I’m glad to be posting again, by the way. I think the wider layout and the fact that I have my preferred monitor back helped give me the push I needed to start up again. Thanks for reading, everyone ♥
